The scourge of social engineering [Link- SC Magazine]

Today, social media platforms are no longer just a forum for online chat but an important every day work and communication tool. Facebook alone has more than a billion users, while social media business platform LinkedIn has more than 400 million users.

Going after the big guns


A well-publicised incident was a three-year social engineering campaign carried out by Iranians. It targeted US military officials, diplomatic and congressional staff, and defence contractors in the country and abroad.

The Iranian spies used Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google+ to carry out a sophisticated attack. They developed fake social media personas and posed as recruiters from major international companies including Northrop Grumman and General Motors. The targets were largely in telecom, government and defence industries.

When a connection was established emails were sent to victims with malware hidden in links and attachments. The aim was to get the target to download malware into their computers which would give the hackers access to highly sensitive information. The striking thing about this social engineering-based attack was its scope and sophistication. It's certainly not an isolated event; for some cyber-criminals it's a career path.

You don't need state resources or an encyclopaedic knowledge of psychology and social media surfing habits. You don't even need to be well-versed in the dark arts of black hat coding. All you need is a bit of patience to trawl the web and the knowledge that too many people put far too much information online than is necessary.

It doesn't take much to create a complete profile including place of work, employment history, address, age, family, likes, dislikes, bank, shopping, recent purchases, family members, their locations and so on.

All information to create a complete profile can be gleaned within a few hours. There are even open source tools designed to help trawl social media platforms and scoop up as much information about any one individual as possible.

This information can be used for targeted phishing attacks at a place of work or brute force password attacks on a company's network. Personal information is gathered on the ‘target' from social media and a phishing email is sent to their place of work.

Malware-laden messages


A phishing email is usually mocked up to look as though it's from an organisation the target has recently dealt with. For instance, the victim may have posted something about his or her brand new iPhone, so the hacker creates an email that purportedly comes from Apple with a message about the phone. A link in the email is clicked by the ‘target' and malware is downloaded into the retailer's system. This provides the means for a hacker to steal the contents of a customer database.

This data is put up for sale on a deep net website that trades in credit card and identity information. The hacker is set to make hundreds of thousands of pounds for a task that in all likelihood took a few days to carry out.


A need to click


Organisations today are, by and large, aware of cyber-threats that come from malware such as trojans, viruses and to some extent, ransomware. However, many haven't yet fully grasped the implications of social engineering with people freely giving away information and casually downloading files from the Internet. As a result, education and awareness programmes for employees can make a significant difference.

At the very least, education programmes will hammer home the point that there are cyber-criminals circling corporate firewalls who are only too keen to get into the network.

Education will make employees aware of sophisticated phishing techniques and how sharing too much of their personal information on a social media platform could well provide the starting point for a crippling network attack.

This can also make personal practice tighter so they don't post workplace information or inadvertently reveal pathways to corporate crown jewels.

LinkedIn, the social media platform, is proving to be a very useful networking tool for business professionals, with a growing database of approximately 380 million users worldwide. The site encourages members to freely share their CV, not just with their network but publically online.

It is also becoming an attractive platform for organised crime gangs.  Recently, there have been several cases where hackers have used information gathered from LinkedIn to plan targeted attacks on companies.

Hackers have been found posing as large corporations on the site to entice unsuspecting executives to divulge useful information. Sometimes the hackers don't even need to lure victims by posing as large corporations, they can gather enough personal information from public profiles to scam money or access sensitive corporate data.

These forms of attacks are proving to be a headache for security professionals. Despite having the best tools and processes in place, it is particularly hard to protect information that sits outside of the company network. It can also take months or even years to find the leak.

Risky business

Most employees are now well aware of the security risks associated with revealing too much personal information on social media sites such as Facebook. However, they often don't realise that revealing corporate information on LinkedIn can be equally risky to businesses.

LinkedIn pages can provide a considerable level of detail to potential cyber attackers: names, job titles, email addresses, partnering organisations, upcoming projects, and even hobbies and interests. At first glance, this information might seem relatively trivial but it can form part of the ‘cyber kill chain' and lead to malicious attacks.

LinkedIn informs the ‘plan of attack'. Employee and company profile pages can help hackers identify a target; source the names of executives and department heads; learn the email structure; as well as the names of affiliated companies. This leaves organisations vulnerable to a range of cyber-attacks including spear phishing.

Human error

Most worryingly perhaps, this issue isn't one that can be simply remedied with protective software. No technical solution can prevent an attacker from conducting an Internet search.

LinkedIn and other social media profiles are often among the first to appear in a list of search engine hits. Once the attacker has deployed the malicious software, cajoled an employee and gained remote access, the key goal is theft, whether the gain is more information, financial or data theft.

Education is the answer

As our virtual presence continues to grow, organisations need to make all employees aware of the potential risks of company details falling into the wrong hands. In order to mitigate the risks of social media sites, without blocking them, which will only frustrate employees, organisations must establish a clear security policy.

To safeguard company information and data, enterprises should educate employees about attending more closely to what they wish to make visible to whom.

If employees are informed then they are far more likely to be consciously aware of the risks as they go about their daily duties and knowing the rational, they are less likely to breach the policy.

The world of IT and security is certainly not static and training should not be a one off activity for new employees. Organisations should consider a continuing programme of education, updating the employees on new threats and breaches on a regular basis.

As more of our private lives are made public and readily available on the Internet, education becomes the vital component.

As of July 2015, LinkedIn has approximately 380 million users worldwide, a number that is continuing to grow. The social media platform is very useful for networking in the business world. It invites users to share their online CV with other industry professionals and establish contacts, publish industry commentary, and research potential employers or candidates.

Reconnaissance
The security risks of sharing personal details on other social media platforms like Facebook have been well documented, but for enterprises, LinkedIn can be equally dangerous. LinkedIn pages can provide a considerable level of detail to potential cyber attackers: names, job titles, email addresses, partnering organisations, upcoming projects, and even hobbies and interests. At first glance, this information might seem relatively trivial, but it forms part of the ‘cyber kill chain’ and can lead to malicious attacks.

For hackers, LinkedIn can inform the ‘plan of attack’. Employee and company profile pages can help hackers identify a target; source the names of executives and department heads; and learn the email structure; as well as the names of affiliated companies.

Socially engineered access
Emails from known sources (a colleague, for example) and information about hobbies, can instill confidence in the targeted individuals, making them more likely to click on the link.

The name drop of the company CEO could create a false air of familiarity, which might spur someone to act hastily and neglect to follow the correct channels. It’s not hard to imagine that an IT helpdesk might grant a ‘known employee’ remote access in response to a pleading call or email to finish time-sensitive work on a Friday afternoon.

This might provide the hacker with the name, job title, and email address of a company employee, all of which are readily accessible on LinkedIn. In return, he stands to make financial gains, steal data, or simply obtain secure company information.

Social Engineering - The Art of Deception

After a friend read my blog post about securing your virtual identity, he recommended that I read the book "The Art of Deception: Controlling the Human Element of Security" by Kevin Mitnick, which can be purchased from Amazon.



The book is structured with stories and anecdotes about how people have fallen for social engineering, and what lessons can be learnt from these situations.  Having worked in an IT security environment for nearly a decade, I am aware of vendor and technical solutions to tackle issues that IT environments without security measures.

Growing up I watched a number of films, including the likes of Wargames, Hackers, The Net and Swordfish.  They may not be great films, but they gave a romantic view of hacking.  I was interested in this realm of IT when I first started my career nearly two decades ago, but I'd say I was a failed script kiddie.  I didn't understand the systems well enough to penetrate the security measures, and struggled to get the tools to work correctly.  

I'd hear the stories of social engineering conquests and I'm in awe of the confidence and arrogance to manipulate people to test an organisations security!  Reading this book shows how easy it is to manipulate people and how easy it is to have them carry out tasks in isolation that seem so insignificant, but when couple with a number of tasks, you have all the pieces of a jigsaw to manipulate a company!

The book was incredibly easy to read and even though I'm not a big reader, I finished it in less than two days.  It's real page turner, and even though it was written nearly 12 years ago it is still very relevant.  If you just read the book about what you shouldn't do, anyone with IT security awareness will tell you they have been told this already.  Taking the story of the manipulation and how to con worked and why is eye opening.

The book ends on how to create a security awareness program, including how to train staff.  Following all the advice will not mean you are secure, but it will certainly help and have people think about who is requesting the action.  All the technology in the world will not secure you and your organisation, but stopping the people from being the weak link will certainly help.
